DANTEDI' : The national day dedicated to Dante Alighieri

Why was March 25th chosen to celebrate Dante Alighieri?

March 25th is the date scholars attribute to the beginning of Dante’s journey in the Divine Comedy.

On the night between March 24th and 25th in the year 1300, at the age of 35, Dante begins his journey through Hell, guided by Virgil, for whom he has great admiration. Together, they pass through the “city of woe” among the damned, eventually reaching Purgatory. Dante is then accompanied into Paradise by his beloved Beatrice, whose task is to guide him back to the “straight path.” When they reach the tenth heaven, Beatrice hands over the role of guide to Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, who leads Dante to the Empyrean, into the presence of God.

Many celebrations take place in Ravenna, where Dante died. From March 25th to 30th, 2025, various initiatives dedicated to schools and Dante enthusiasts will be held at the city's Dante-related sites. For more information, please visit: www.vivadante.it.
